Back some years ago we owned and operated Billabong Products, we were in the business of manufacturing and sales of water Skis and Accessories, we decieded to undertake the project of converting a once outboard powered 17 ft dancraft boat into a stern drive Ski Boat. We where working on a limited budget and knew that what we should ideally have been buying a new Alfa 1 Racing Mercruiser Sterndrive leg, unfortunatly at the time just the Sterndarive leg without all the fixings was out of our budget, so we decided to hunt around for a second hand 260hp Mercruiser Leg to match up to a high performance modified 350 Chevy street car motor built to 370 hp . Unfortunately what we found was that it was very hard to aquire these Sterndrive second hand in Queensland after finding that most of the marine wreckers have been contracted by the southern ski boat builders to sell them direct to them for reconditioning and to go into new ski boats. Well in our search we where only able to come up with a Mercruiser 160hp Sterndrive designed for coupling up to a 6 cyl motor, we decided to purchase this as we felt that they where the same casting and that we might be able to upgrade this unit to at least 260hp which we did. Well the boat was finished and launched after a few minor hiccups it performed very well for the first 6 weeks or so when disaster struck , we blew out a top end gear taking 3 teeth off it, all the local Marine Dealers told us that we just needed a racing leg and that was that, well we did find a company down south that also raced sterndrive boats and they informed us that we could purchase a 260 hp gear from them and that would last a while, but to make shure we should have a spare leg on the ute as it was expected to also blow the top gear. This gear lasted approx 6 months which we where fairly happy with the vast improvement, we knew that the was a lot of stress on the gears as the housing was getting very hot, This was noticed as we would board the Boat by holding onto the top gearbox of the Sterndrive Leg.. A friend that was skiing with us at the time of our second gear blowing, suggested that we should try a product he had been using for some years in his Cars Machinery and a Truck, He handed me a bottle of product then known as CLM MBL8 lubricant, He told me that he thought it would fix my problem, I remember almost laughing and thinking that this was never going to work, its my silly mistake trying to pump so much horsepower though a low rated box , at this stage after upgrading the top gear we were pumping at least a extra 90 hp more than we should have been though this Mercruiser. Michael asked me how much it would cost me to buy a new gear I had answered him with about $250-300 dollars but the problem was we where lucky this time as the housing was intact next time we might not be so lucky and they were $1300.00 new back then, Michael suggested that for an extra $18.00 for this MBL lubricant this could be the end of my problems , I agreed that it would be nice if it were but I really thought that it would never work, after seeing a demo at his home on a Friction Brake Machine that I must say was very impressive, I decided to give it a go and that it might even work. When we put the new gear in we dosed the oil at 20ml per litre and from the day that boat went back in the water the leg ran much cooler around the top housing, the rest is history, that gear lasted many years happy skiing in both social and race conditions, in fact the gear is still intact today although we did changed the whole leg and add MBL concentrate after a casting broke in the leg itself, having it seize in the back of the boat. So now every time we drop the leg for maintenance our first priority is to add our PRO-MA MBL concentrate to our Mercruiser Sterndrive gear oil. We still own the Bunyip and it has been running as a Sterndrive Ski Boat now since 1986 alot of years ago and is still going strong today….Thanks to Pro-ma Performance Products. We also used MBL 8 concentrate in the engine of the boat, as well as MBL 8 Concentrate and the PRO-MA fuel treatments in all our cars and a Bedford Motorhome. Yours faithfully Shaughan Luxton
